Despite a quiet start to the year on Midland waters, because of pandemic related issues, Lough Ree RNLI volunteer crews responded to a call for assistance over the weekend (Saturday, July 9) which brought the total ‘call-outs’ for the year to 20.

The RNLI has opened its most westerly shop in Ireland on Inis Mór to raise vital funds for the charity dedicated to saving lives at sea.

As it celebrates its 10th anniversary, volunteers at Lough Ree RNLI will host a dual celebration at Coosan Point at 2pm on Saturday, June 11, when the charity’s new state-of-the-art lifeboat station will be officially opened.

The volunteer crew of Clifden RNLI joined Aran Islands RNLI and Shannon-based Rescue 115 helicopter to carry out a search of the waters around Bunowen Bay last weekend.

Achill Island RNLI was involved in a 14 hour rescue overnight, (Sunday/Monday 22/23 May), to a lone sailor onboard a yacht which had lost power almost 40 nautical miles west of Achill Island.

During a busy first month at the new lifeboat station at Coosan Point volunteer crew guided visitors from near and far through the state of the art facility in the first public tours of the base, the panoramic view from the new training room giving a new aspect of Lough Ree to the visitors.

Clifden RNLI’s new all-weather Shannon class lifeboat arrived to an emotional welcome from crowds gathered in the Connemara community to see it complete its week-long voyage home from the charity’s All Weather lifeboat centre in Poole. The lifesaving vessel is the first ‘Launch a Memory’ lifeboat to be put on service in Ireland. The St. Christopher carries the names of over 10,000 people on its hull, which were put there by members of the public through a special ‘in memory’ fundraising initiative for the charity.

A new all-weather RNLI Shannon class lifeboat is on its way home to its permanent base at Clifden where it will save lives off the choppy west coast of Connemara. The lifeboat is a special one in the Irish fleet as it carries the names of over 10,000 people onboard, put there by members of the public through a special fundraising initiative which was run by the search and rescue charity back in 2020.

Usually, the lifesavers of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) answer mayday calls – it’s the most serious call for help. But this May, they need your help.

Clifden RNLI joined a multi-agency response in Clifden earlier this week when a man fell into the water at Clifden Quay.
